New Phase in Dumfries Congregation
The Dumfries congregation has experienced many changes over the years. Services have been ‘as arranged’ and were located in different places – latterly in Collin and in Lochmaben. The Interim-Moderator, Rev David Fraser, has worked tirelessly to keep the witness going, since the retirement of Rev William B Scott. Mr Fraser has a long-standing connection with the congregation, having laboured there in student days to save it from threatened extinction. No less valuable has been the contribution of the faithful elder, Mr Malcolm Noble, along with his wife Audrey, who have travelled on the Lord’s Day from Scotby, near Carlisle, for nearly forty years.
It is through Mr and Mrs Noble’s connections with the Brethren that the congregation of Dumfries has acquired the former Brethren Assembly meeting place, Ebenezer Hall, Bridge Street, Lockerbie. The congregation have been given licence to occupy the building rent free from the Trustees, initially for a period of eighteen months. The running costs will be met by the congregation. Occupation was from the 1st March and a service is now held each Lord’s Day in the Hall at 2.30pm. At the Annual General Meeting of the congregation on Tuesday 22nd March, Rev David Fraser expressed thankfulness to the Most High for the provision of such a suitable place of worship and paid tribute to Mr and Mrs Noble for all their efforts in procuring it.
In the meantime the service will continue to be held on the Lord’s Day at 2.30pm, with visiting preachers. It is planned to have the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper on 10th April, with sevices at 12noon and 2.00pm. An official ‘Opening Day’ is planned for Saturday 21st May. Further details of this will be given later. Contact is being made with homes in the area and it is hoped the restoration of a Gospel witness in a Hall that has stood empty for some years will attract needy souls to hear “the glorious Gospel of the blessed God”. Please make this known to any contacts you have in the area.
