“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)
“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” (Genesis 18:19)
(A) INTRODUCTION
The Scriptures are clear. We are to give our children a Christian education. In seeking to fulfil this responsibility before the Lord, there is a freedom of choice which will take account of differing providential individual situations in family circumstances. Some Christian parents may choose to send their children to a Christian school, while others choose to give their children a Christian home education, and others choose to supplement their children’s education which they receive in secular schools.
It is important to recognise that in a sense all Christian parents have a duty to provide Christian Education at home, even when they are not deliberate about this. The home should always be seen as the basic training ground for children. It is of course better to be intentional rather than accidental, and to be aware of the pitfalls in modern state schooling with its secular/humanistic worldview bias. It is important to recognise that such education is not neutral and any Christian element is often both limited and inadequately presented. This makes it important in such circumstances to supplement state schooling with distinctly Christian teaching, especially in the critical areas of science, religion and ethics.
It is the prayerful concern of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) Welfare of Youth & Education Committee that the links found in this paper to Christian Schools, Christian Home Educating Organisations and various Christian Curricula providers and to other relevant resources may prove to be a help and encouragement to Christian parents and their children. It needs to be borne in mind that there is a spiritual war on for the hearts and minds of our children (Ephesians 6:10-20). Hopefully this material, with the blessing of our sovereign covenant God, will both be crucial in the education of our children and enable them to see all life in the light of the principles and teachings of the Word of the Living God which is “the only rule to direct us how we may glorify and enjoy Him”; and that by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the blessing of the Holy Spirit, they may be “thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:17).

(D) CURRICULUM PROVIDERS
When it comes to Christian curricula, the challenge will be not a lack of choice, but what exactly to choose. Keep in mind that though the curricula may have an evangelical Christian ethos, it may not come from a distinctly Reformed Christian perspective. That is not necessarily a problem, depending on the subject being studied or your chosen method of education. Also, much of Home-Schooling Curricula is American, though the material can be readily adapted by British users.
Please remember the curricula noted here have already been used by Christian home-educating families in our denomination. At the same time, the way it is adopted or adapted may well vary from one family to another. Some families will use the curriculum as it is, while others will use part of it, or adapt it to their individual needs, and, effectively ‘pick and mix’ from various sources. It is recommended that parents considering Christian schooling should consult with those involved in Christian schools, or those who have the experience of teaching at home (whether independently or within the state system).
