The 2021 General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) met at 6pm on Monday 24th May 2021, and, after an address by the retiring Moderator, Rev. William Macleod, Knightswood, on John 17:11, elected the new Moderator, Rev. Murdo A. N. Macleod, Snizort.
Due to the continuing difficulties arising from the coronavirus Covid-19, the meetings were held using a teleconferencing format, and, whilst this did bring new challenges, it also meant that a larger group of Commissioners was able to be present.
Amongst those present were representatives of the French and Spanish Mission and this proved a very special Assembly for them, as it was agreed to further develop the work and erect a Presbytery covering the congregations there. The Assembly also heard from Rev. Partheepan from Sri Lanka. Like many other nations they have experienced sorrow and difficulty due to the pandemic, but the Assembly were encouraged to hear of the ongoing work there.
The Assembly paid warm tribute to the late Rev. John MacLeod, Principal Clerk, and appointed Rev. Graeme Craig as his successor. Other appointments included Rev. Greg Macdonald as the new Lecturer in Systematic Theology. Thanks for the recent successful Judicial review, continued concern at the widespread spiritual decline, and a fresh commitment to the Authorised Version of the Bible, were amongst other matters considered.
